Skolen åpnet 1881. Skolekretsen ble opprettet 1858, med en fast skole på Bones, som 1881 ble flyttet til Åsvang. Skoletomten ble fradelt Moholt østre 1881 og solgt til Lade skolekommune. Deler av skolen var beslaglagt av tyskerne fra 1941. Skolekorpset ble opprettet 1945. Den eldste skolebygningen er bevart og inngår som en del av anlegget. De tidligere skolebygningene ble oppført 1946 (ark. Roar Tønseth) og 1955-58 (ark. Ingvar Tagseth). Skolen fikk nye og tidsmessige bygninger 2003.
