Description

Échidna à coté de deux lions Échidna, représentée en femme-serpent à écailles est un des personnages mythologiques du chaos primitif. Elle apparaît également dans les travaux d'Hercule. Sa relation aux lions (à droite) est incertaine mais ces animaux figurent sur les armes de la ville de Viterbe, chef-lieu de la province où se trouve Bomarzo et qui aurait été fondée par Hercule selon la légende.

Le parc des Monstres (appelé aussi Bois sacré ou Villa des Merveilles) a été conçu par le grand architecte Pirro Ligorio en 1552 à la demande du prince Vicino Orsini, le seigneur de Bomarzo.

Il est situé au pied du mont Cimino (dans le Latium, à une vingtaine de kilomètres de Viterbe) dans un vallon parcouru par un torrent.

Le parc a inspiré de nombreux artistes, notamment surréalistes mais également Niki de Saint Phalle qui a réalisé son Jardin des Tarots à moins de cent kilomètres de distance.
