Description
Français : L'église de Saint-François-Xavier aux îles-de-la-Madeleine, citée monument historique, est un lieu de culte de tradition catholique, d'inspiration néoromane érigé de 1936 à 1939.

La valeur patrimoniale de l'église repose sur l'intérêt de son implantation. Il s'agit de la deuxième église construite sur ce site; la première église du village Bassin, érigée en 1873, est détruite par les flammes en 1936. L'église actuelle fait partie de l'ensemble institutionnel du village de Bassin avec le presbytère et le cimetière qui l'entourent, ainsi qu'avec l'école primaire et la caisse populaire situées à proximité. Cet ensemble est caractéristique des noyaux villageois de la première moitié du XXe siècle au Québec.

Dans le village de Bassin, celui-ci est particulièrement bien défini en comparaison du paysage bâti plus dispersé, qui caractérise les aux îles-de-la-Madeleine. L'église profite également d'une position avantageuse dans le paysage. Elle est située parallèlement au chemin principal du village, sur un terrain en pente douce, qui descend vers le golfe du Saint-Laurent. L'implantation de l'église de Saint-François-Xavier démontre son importance au sein du village de Bassin.
