Étrangers à Paris
Description
This series of caricatures about foreigners in Paris depicts British, American and Siamese tourists. The British are represented as stingy and mean. The insistence, in the caricatures, on their love of meat and beefsteak may be linked to the nickname that the French gave the British a few decades earlier ("les roast beefs", or "rosbifs"), in reference to a way of cooking that was particular to the British. Americans are also represented here: the Civil War had just began, which can explain why they are depicted as fighting or trying to steal canons.
