English: The Ōkārito Obelisk in Ōkārito, New Zealand commemorates the drive-by visit of Abel Tasman, the land being claimed for Britain by Cook, the purchase of almost all the West Coast for just £300, and its subsequent colonisation by settlers looking for gold. It was erected during New Zealand's Centennial Year (1940), when these four events were seen as unequivocally good things and worth a monument. The obelisk was unveiled on 21 May 1940 by the then Minister of Public Works, Robert Semple. Originally it had been intended to build it at the trig station nearby but this plan was abandoned – it would have been too difficult to transport the materials to the summit of a steep hill, 137 metres above sea level. The County Council therefore decided to build the obelisk in front of the school. It cost £150, which was raised by public subscription. |
