Старший сын Святослава, Ярополк, отняв удел брата своего Олега, захватил и удел Владимира. Последний спасся бегством и завладел впоследствии Киевским престолом. При осаде города Родни, Ярополк, не вняв мольбам верного Варяжко, склонился на увещевание воеводы Блуда, предательски уговорившего его сдаться на милость Владимиру.
