(Malvaceae Juss., 1789).
English: China rose (Hibiscus rosa-sinensis L.) from the genus Hibiscus (Hibiscus L., 1753) of the family Malvaceae (Malvaceae Juss., 1789).
Hibiscus rosa-sinensis, colloquially known as Chinese hibiscus, China rose, Hawaiian hibiscus, rose mallow, and shoeblack plant, is a species of tropical hibiscus, a flowering plant in the Hibisceae tribe of the family Malvaceae. It is widely cultivated as an ornamental plant in the tropics and subtropics. The plant is a bushy, evergreen shrub or small tree growing 8–16 ft tall and 5–10 ft wide. Its stem is aerial, erect, green, cylindrical, and branched. The leaves are simple and petiolate, with alternate phyllotaxy. The leaf shape is ovate, the tip is acute, and the margin is serrated. The flowers bloom in summer and autumn. They are typically red, with five petals 4 in in diameter, with prominent orange-tipped red anthers. Cultivars and hybrids have flowers in a variety of colors as well as red: white, pink, orange, peach, yellow, blue, and purple. Some plants have double flowers. The plant is native to Vanuatu. It is also known as the most common species of hibiscus and is grown as an ornamental hedge in tropical and subtropical regions worldwide. It is likely from Southeast Asia, though some authorities point to Vanuatu in Oceania or various other tropical regions. No wild populations of the plant have been found in modern times. English: Chinese rose hibiscus, cultivar Török, in Antalya, Turkey. Karaalioğlu Park. |
