Своим происхождением Кара-Даг обязан древнему вулкану, извергавшемуся в этих местах в Юрский период, когда по Земле еще бродили динозавры. Потом, примерно 120-130 млн. лет назад, произошла чудовищная катастрофа, разорвавшая огромный вулкан на части, в результате чего образовалась, а в течение времени и полностью сформировалась береговая линия. Вместе с этим появились и такие геологические образования, как громады Балалы-Кая, Кок-Кая, Карагача, Легенера, Сюрю-Кая, Хоба-Тепе и скальные образования необычных и причудливых форм.
