The Eurasian Wryneck (Jynx torquilla)

Summary edit

Description
English: The Eurasian wryneck (Jynx Torquilla). Masters of camouflage - male and female have grayish-brown protective plumage coloration, which hides the Eurasian wryneck well on the background of tree bark. The bird got its name due to its characteristic behaviour - if the wryneck is caught unawares, it spreads its tail, ruffles its feathers, and lowers its wings. At the same time, the bird hisses and twists its neck and eyes, pretending to be a snake. If you pick up the Eurasian wryneck, it can pretend to be dead (thanatosis). Although the wryneck belongs to the woodpecker family, this bird does not chop wood and does not stay in our country for the winter. What unites the wryneck with other woodpeckers is the structure of its legs and a long, sticky tongue, which the bird uses to get its favorite food - ants.
