Женская гимназия (ныне школа № 4) была построена в 1874 году. В 1874 году, 1 сентября начался учебный год. Первым директором является Боголюбов Владимир Иванович. Это была Алексеевская женская гимназия. Гимназия называлась Алексеевской в честь наследника царевича Алексея. Обучались здесь девочки состоятельных родителей: богатых землевладельцев, купцов, хозяев приисков и дочери духовенства. Имя Калинина было присвоено школе в 1923 г. в честь его приезда в Благовещенск. Позже выпускниками 1966 г. был установлен бюст М.И. Калинина. История школы хранит в себе очень много известных фамилий. Так, например: в 1929 г. школу посетил маршал Семён Михайлович Будённый.
