(Cactaceae Juss. (1789), nom. cons.).
English: Opuntia ficus-indica (Opuntia ficus-indica (L.) Mill., 1768) from the genus Opuntia (Opuntia Mill., 1754) of the family Cactus (Cactaceae Juss. (1789), nom. cons.).
Opuntia ficus-indica, also known as the prickly pear. It was first published in Gard. Dict., ed. 8.: n.° 2 in 1768. This plant is a succulent shrub or tree that grows primarily in the seasonally dry tropical biome. It is native to Mexico and has been introduced into various regions around the world. The plant can grow between 1.5-5 m tall. The stem segments are green, broadly oblong to ovate to narrowly elliptic, and low tuberculate. The flowers are yellow to orange, and the fruits are yellow to orange to purple. Opuntia ficus-indica has environmental uses and social uses, as animal food and a medicine, and for fuel and food. It's interesting to note that despite its common name "prickly pear", it is not related to pear trees.English: Opuntia ficus-indica in Antalya, Turkey |
