English: The Hovhannes St. Karapet Monastery (better known as the St. Karapet of Jnjrlu) is a medieval Armenian architectural complex located in the Ararat region of Armenia, 1 km north-east of the now abandoned settlement of Jnjrlu, on the northern slope of the Urtzi mountains, the right side of the Vedi-Lusashogh road. The St. Karapet Monastery consists of three monumental buildings and monastic cells by the walls of the Monastery destroyed over time.
The main building is the Spitakavor St. Astvatzatzin Church. According to the lithographic inscriptions on the Monastery, the construction was completed in 1301. Its founder is Kirakos Vardapet Getketsi, the architect is Bout. The construction was sponsored by Princess Gontsa, the wife of Prince Jalal, the son Prince Tarsayitch of the Orbelyans. The St. Karapet Monastery complex has a vicarage as well and dates back to the 14th century, built to the south-west of the St. Astvatzatzin Church. To the west of the vicarage there is the two-storeyed church-tomb. Finely ornamented khachkars and tombstones with household images are preserved in the monastic cemetery. The Monastery complex also had its own aqueduct with baked clay pipes stretching to the reservoir. |
