Description

עברית: אשדוד-ים הייתה עיר מסחר משגשגת עם נמל עמוק-מים שנקראה בשם היווני אזוֹטוֹס פאראליוֹס, ותועדה במפת מידבא. העיר המשיכה להתקיים בתקופה הערבית הקדומה, בין המאה ה-8 למאה ה-11 - התקופה ממנה נשמרו השרידים המרשימים שנמצאים לחופה הדרומי של אשדוד, וביניהם מצודת אשדוד-ים הגדולה שמכונה בערבית קלעת אל-מינה. חפירות ארכאולוגיות נערכו באתר על ידי יעקב קפלן בשנים 1968-1965. בחפירות נתגלו כמה ממצאים וביניהם חרסים ומטבעות עתיקים מהתקופה הערבית בארץ ישראל. ההנחה כי מצודה זו, בדומה למצודות שנמצאו ביבנה ים ובאשקלון נועדו להגנה מפי פלישות מהים התיכון. בינואר 2014 נפתחו לציבור שתי אחוזות קבר השייכות לבית הקברות של העיר אשדוד-ים מהמאה ה-4 עד המאה ה-6, בהן נקברו בני המעמד הגבוה מהתקופה הרומית ומהביזנטית.
