Description
English: Built in 1870, this structure was designed by Theodore C. Heuck to serve as the headquarters of the Kingdom of Hawaii’s Royal Guard, and was originally located on the site of the present-day Hawaii State Capitol. Inspired by medieval European castles, the building was constructed of coral block, with crenellated parapets and three towers on the front and rear facades, arrow slit windows in the upper portions of the towers, a central courtyard accessed via a breezeway with an arched opening, a slate roof, with rooms ringing the courtyard once serving as a dispensary, berth room, lockup, mess hall, and kitchen. The barracks were the site of an attempted mutiny on September 6, 1873, due to tensions between officers and enlisted men, with the matter being resolved peacefully and the Hawaiian army being disbanded by King Lunalilo, not being restored until 1874 when King David Kalākaua came to power the following February. After the Hawaiian monarchy was overthrown in 1893, the Royal Guard was disbanded, and the barracks were utilized by the National Guard of Hawai’i, with the structure also serving as a temporary shelter for residents displaced by the 1900 Chinatown Fire. The building was later used to house government offices and was utilized as a warehouse before construction of the current Hawaii State Capitol began in 1965, making it necessary to move the historic structure, with the building disassembled and relocated to the grounds of ‘Iolani Palace. Rebuilt and restored following the move, the barracks now serves as a visitor center, restrooms, offices, and gift shop for the palace. The building is a contributing structure in the Hawaii Capital Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.
