Description
English: Built in 1923, the Yang Family Ancestral Hall is an ancient house funded by members of the Yang family living in various parts of Pingtung. Yang Family Ancestral Hall is a traditional Hakka quadrangle architecture situated on a sloped terrain with the center of the building as the highest point of the house accompanied by descending wings. The Hall once faced removal due to road construction plan but was fortunately preserved under the efforts of family descendents and was later listed as a National 3rd Category Historical Site by the Taiwanese Government. Traditional Hakka architecture’s emphasis on feng-shui can be seen in the "Tai-chi Pond" located in front of the Hall. Land Deity placed beneath the ancestral tablet is also a unique architectural feature which can only be found in Taiwan. Within the heart-shaped pond, the image of Tai-Chi, which represents both ying and yang, was built with red bricks. According to traditional feng-shui, such arrangement can bring wealth and is a symbol of a wish for a fruitful family. On the other hand, Land Deity which originated from the "dragon vein" of Taiwu Mountain was placed in the Pond to enliven the feng-shui in hope to give blessings to the Cheng descendents.
