中文（臺灣）：本文以鄉土地理的角度，來探討橋頭鄉的區域特性與形成，進而培養大眾對於鄉土的關懷與認同的價值觀。
本文共分4個部分，以時序性的方式來論述橋頭鄉的發展。一為橋頭鄉的區域概況，以簡述該地的位置、環境、人口、水文、產業與行政區為背景，說明一個區域的形成並非一夕而成，而是透過人群與環境在長時間的頻繁互動而建立的聚落；二為漢人入墾前的橋頭地區，在漢人未進入該地開墾以前，該地的植被以高茂草原與茂密森林為主，居民為馬卡道平埔族，該族群為群居，且以「社」為部落單位；三為從零星開墾到全面開發，說明在明鄭、清領時期的漢人，逐漸由小區域的屯田方式，轉變為大規模的開墾集團；四為橋仔頭庄核心地位的確立，在漢人的拓墾下，當地諸多村落的農業、水利等設施逐漸完善，進而促使人口移入遽增，市街商貿發達，其中又以橋仔頭庄最為興盛。到了日治初期，橋頭地區雖然因抗日事件而有短暫發展停滯，但因後有縱貫鐵路與新式糖廠的大型設施的建立，而凸顯該地的重要性。 透過史料與地圖的對照與考證，不僅使我們更了解橋頭鄉在臺灣歷史脈絡中的地位，更能表達出一個區域的形成，是透過經年累月的過程與複雜的人文活動所建構出的產物。 |
