Description
中文（臺灣）：1898年北宜公路動工，徵用歸順土匪與役；1899年五月開通，於湖底嶺之路頂上設有一小型公園，可遠眺攬勝。1900年完工時，宜蘭廳長西鄉菊次郎在公園內立石，刻有「湖底嶺開路碑」，而由台灣總督兒玉源太郎篆額『平塹雲開』，記載當時開路的艱辛過程，後人便稱立碑處為「石牌」。1962年9月林才添縣長在石背銘以「金面大觀」；1965年7月陳進東縣長將西鄉碑文磨掉，改刻「亢懷今古」四字，原先的碑文已蕩然無存。石牌因位於北宜公路的最高點，景觀氣勢萬千，於1954年被選定為新蘭陽八景之一。
