Johnson] [Washington, D.C.] : [Henry Ulke], 1868. 1 photograph : albumen print on card mount, hand-colored ; mount 11 x 6 cm (carte de visite format) Notes: Photograph shows Walter W. Johnson (1836-1879), civil engineer, explorer, surveyor, and teacher of freedmen in Washington, D.C. Johnson died from a fall in a Virginia mine in 1879. He was adopted by noted scientist Walter R. Johnson and Nancy Johnson, an inventor, missionary and teacher. The family is buried at Oak Hill Cemetery, Washington, D.C. Title devised by Library staff. The text "Walter W. Johnson killed by falling down the shaft of a mine in Va. 25 Jan., 1879" written on front of photograph. DLC Photograph is housed in an album. Album page has decorative gold borders framing the print. DLC Please use the digital image in the online catalog to preserve the original photograph.
