English: Saint Mary's Church, Antingham, Norfolk, England, mural monument to William Kemp (1675-1744) of Antingham. South wall of the chancel. He was a younger son of w:Sir Robert Kemp, 2nd Baronet (1627–1710) of Gissing, Norfolk, by his 2nd wife Mary Sone. William Kemp was born on 2 December 1675 in Ubbeston, Suffolk and inherited the estate of Antingham from his father. He married thrice: (Source:https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Kemp-1468)
Inscribed in Latin: M(emoriae) S(acrum) Gulielmi Kemp nuper de Antingham Armigeri qui obiit XIImo (duodecimo) die Maii Anno Domini MDCCXLIV aetatis suae LXIXno (sexagensimo nono) ac post mortem lucem in caelis sperat aeternam ("Sacred to the memory of William Kemp late of Antingham who died on the 12th of May in the year of our Lord 1744 of his age the 69th and after death he hopes for eternal light in Heaven")'. Arms: Gules, three garbs and a bordure engrailed or (Burke, Sir Bernard, The General Armory, London, 1884, p.557 "Kemp of Gissing, Norfolk, baronets") with inescutcheon of pretence of Argent, a chevron gules between three crosses crosslet fitchée azure (Shardelow) (Burke, Sir Bernard, The General Armory, London, 1884, p.916 "Shardelow of Schimpling, Norfolk" originally of "Shardelow, Suffolk"). See also: A misericord, St. Martin's Church, Thompson, Norfolk, sculpted with three shields of arms of Shardelow Argent, a chevron gules between three crosses-crosslet fitchée azure. As seen in a stained glass window in the same church with the inscription "Shardelow" above. In 1348 de Shardelowe brothers endowed St. Martin's Church, Thompson, as a Collegiate Church in response to the Black Death, and a College of Priests was built. |
