editDescription-2020-01-29 Blue plaque for Commander Locker-Lampson, Norwich Road, Cromer.JPG |
English: A blue plaque that commemorates the war time activities of Commander Oliver Locker-Lampson, (born 25-09-1880 died 8-10-1954), as the commander of an Armoured Car Division in Russia in 1915. The plaque is on the outside of the Lodge, a house located on the corner of Norwich road with Court Drive. This is near were his home, Newhaven Court, once stood. Locker-Lampson, as well his career in the Royal Navy, was a politician and an MP. Locker-Lampson political preoccupation before 1914 was the harrying Herbert Asquith's Liberal government over the selling of honours and the Marconi scandal. He also opposed Irish Home Rule, and controversially raised funds for Edward Carson's Unionist militia, the Ulster Volunteer Force. After the war, being a virulent ant-communist he was initially involved in organised several mass rallies under the banner 'Rout the Reds', many of which were stewarded by members of Rotha Lintorn-Ormans’s British Fascisti. He also expressed admiration for Adolf Hitler in the Daily Mirror. However, from 1933 onwards, Locker-Lampson had changed his views and became a vocal activist against fascism both in Britain and in continental Europe. In July 1933 he introduced a Private member's bill to extend British citizenship to Jewish refugees from Nazi persecution, though it failed to become law. In 1933 Commander Locker-Lampson was instrumental in Helping Albert Einstein (1879-1955) seek refuge from Nazi Germany. He set him up in a wooden cabin on Roughton Heath near his home here in Cromer. Another blue plaque commemorates this fact on the wall of the New Inn public house in the village of Roughton. |
