Description
English: A CWGC gravestone for Boy 2nd class William John Hewitt in the south west of the churchyard of St James' parish church in the village of Southrepps, Norfolk.
William John Hewitt, Boy 2nd Class, Royal Navy William was born on 16 March 1901 in Norwich. He was the son of John Henry and Anne E Hewitt, of Chapel Road, Upper Street, Southrepps. In 1916 he joined the Great Eastern Railway as Parcel van Lad. In 1918 aged 17 he enlisted in the Royal Navy and joined the boys' training establishment at HMS Powerful in Devonport. His records describe him as being 5ft 3in tall with a 33 inch chest, dark brown hair, blue eyes with a fresh complexion. Hewitt died in the Spanish Flu pandemic on 16 March 1918. The causes of his death are recorded as influenza and broncho pnuomonia.
