Description

A submission to our #JWSTArt social media campaign by David Law and Nora Luetzgendorf.

Artists' Statement: "‘Webb Rising’ is a stained glass art window built in collaboration between Dr. David Law of STScI and Dr. Nora Luetzgendorf of ESA. David and Nora are astronomers on the JWST MIRI and NIRSpec instrument teams, and built this piece to symbolize the spectroscopic power of JWST. The individual telescope segments show the tessellated patterns common to the integral-field spectroscopy technique, and the background field illustrates the stars, planets, and galaxies that JWST will be able to study with a dark infrared sky. The window contains 503 individual pieces and is constructed in the Tiffany style, where each piece of glass is wrapped in copper foil before being soldered together."

This is a close-up view of the stained glass work.
