Description Carondelet Park in St. Louis City on 8/30/13. This moth was an amazing experience. I noticed what looked like a leaf that flushed from the ground near a basswood tree - this 'leaf' flew off low to the ground about ten feet away. I followed to take a look and the mimicry of this moth was pure magic. I was in love. Flushing two more times, this moth continued to mesmerize me. It would stay very low to the ground when it flew and then would land about ten or so feet away, not far. It would carefully reposition itself within the leaves, twigs, grass and matrix under my feet. My best guess for an ID is Large Maple Spanworm moth. No one would ever suspect this moth of being anything but a decaying leaf. I know moths in general seem to be the kings and queens of mimicry, but this one grabbed my heart today, as the moths have been doing in general lately.
