Summary
editDescription0011122 Bastar Shiv Temple Chhattisgarh 027.jpg |
English: This is a 12th century Shiva temple. A stone temple, it has a moulded base, a small mandapa and a sanctum with Shiva linga. On the top of the sanctum is a pyramidal sikhara with an amalaka. The walls are relatively plain. The design is a blend of mostly Dravida and some Nagara architecture.
The significance of this Shiva temple is in being one of many historic Hindu temples in Bastar region and south Chhattisgarh by the 12th century. A colonial era theory proposed this region to be historically tribal, a conjecture largely discarded with the discovery of numerous Hindu, Jain and Buddhist monuments in this region. This region did become more forested and tribal-like after these temples and monuments became ruins and were abandoned after the 13th century invasions and political changes. |
