English: The Sree Subrahmanya Swami temple in Haripad, also known as Dakshina Palani, is a historic temples complex dedicated to four-armed Murugan (Kartikeya). It has notable inscriptions, murals and a partly ruined koothambalam (temple theatre) that has intermittently hosted Kutiyattam. The temple was damaged by a fire in early 20th century, then rebuilt upon the historic foundations.
The temples complex is large and includes almost all items of Kerala Hindu architecture. The main shrine for Subrahmanya has a circular plan with namaskara mandapan and other structures inside a nalambalam. Other shrines include those for Ganesha, Shiva, Parvati, Hanuman, Krishna and others. The temple tank is to the north of the complex. The Koothambalam or the theater hall is to the southeast of Subrahmanya temple nalambalam. It has a rectangular plan. The stage (ramgapeedam) is raised above the floor. The backstage (nepadhyam) area serves as prep (green) room for artists. The viewers space is called the prekshaka gruham. This Hindu temple theatre is decorated with beautiful wooden artwork depicting Hindu legends. |
