Deutsch: Kiruna ist mit etwa 17.500 Einwohnern die nördlichste Stadt in Schweden. Sie liegt 200 Kilometer über dem Polarkreis in Lappland. Die Stadt wurde 1900 als Bergbaugemeinde zum Abbau von Eisenerz gegründet. Damit der Erzabbau weiter betrieben werden kann, soll bis 2040 die gesamte Stadt in Richtung Osten verlegt werden. In Kirun befindet sich angeblich die größte unterirdische Eisenerzmine der Welt.
English: Kiruna is the northernmost city in Sweden with around 17,500 inhabitants. It is located 200 kilometers above the Arctic Circle in Lapland. The city was founded in 1900 as a mining community for the extraction of iron ore. So that ore mining can continue, the entire city is to be relocated to the east by 2040. It is said that Kirun is home to the largest underground iron ore mine in the world. |
