English: The Kalpathur Paradevata temple in Kozhikode district is a 14th-century Hindu temple complex. It illustrates the medieval era Hindu temple architectural elements in the Kurumbra region, Western Ghats of Kerala.
The temple complex architectural elements include an arched gateway (Padippura) on the east, a conventional two-storeyed edifice (Malika) on the south, two sanctums (Srikovils) and two namaskara mandapams. The central area has four interconnected shrines in Vishnu avatar Rama tradition (Nalambalam), and a passage with Bali-peeta (Balikkalppura) to the west which has extensive and beautiful wood carvings. The primary Srikovil has a granite Adhishtana and a laterite wall. The temple uses wood – such as from Jackfruit tree – extensively for structure as well as artwork. For example, the Dvarapalikas are wooden as is the 5.5 feet Paradevata idol (Vettakkorumakan) inside the sanctum. The idol is sometimes referred to as Kiratamurti, and the temple as Kalpathur Idam. Other shrines in the complex are dedicated to Bhagavati, Ganesha and others. The Padippura similarly has remarkable carvings of small figures on its roof, colored. The wooden carvings depict Hindu legends such as Rama Pattabhishekam, Siva Parvati Parinayam, Ananthasayanam, and Palazhimadhanam. Thus this temple complex, like most other historic sites in India, include artwork and shrines for all major Hindu traditions – Shaivism, Vaishnavism and Shaktism. |
