Description
English: The Cave 12 at Udaygiri Caves site near Vidisha is dedicated to Narasimha avatar of Vishnu. It is not a fully excavated cave, but just rock-cut niches through a pre-existing, undeciphered shell script inscription. It is near the top of the rock, far from the floor, so the way to reach the image is by sight and the flight of one's mind. The Narasimha relief stands at the top, below him are two dwarapalas. Cave 12 is significant because it is the oldest known artwork of Narasimha avatar in India (c. 5th century). Further, since it carved through an older inscription, it proves that the Udayagiri Caves site is more ancient than the 5th century, likely from the pre-Gupta era. The Cave 12 also implies that the Shell script, though undeciphered, was already in use in ancient India before the 4th-century.
