Summary
editDescription0121421 Brahmi script Prakrit language 3rd-century BCE, Ashoka Minor Rock Edict, Gujarra Madhya Pradesh 05.jpg |
English: This Ashoka edict consists of five lines in Brahmi script. It is inscribed on a rock near Jhansi, Datia district, Madhya Pradesh.
This is minor rock edict # 1 only. It was first discovered in 1953 by a forest contractor, and published in 1954. This inscription is notable because the name of Ashoka is used together with his titles: "Devanampriya Priyadasi Ashokaraja". This helps confirm that ancient Indian inscriptions that use the phrase Devanampriya Priyadasi are all associated with Ashoka, even if the inscription does not include the name Ashoka. Other that this Gujarra edict, the same "Devanampriya Priyadasi Ashokaraja" phrase is only seen with the Maski, Nitoor and Udaygolam inscriptions. The inscription says Ashoka has been an Upasaka for 2.5 years, that no matter what one's wealth, dharma practices and self restraint leads to great heaven. He urges everyone to exert for the cause of dharma. |
