Description0121921 Patthar Mahal Masjid, Islam Shah mosque, Kalinjar Fort, Uttar Pradesh 001.jpg |
English: The Patthar Mahal Masjid, also known as the Islam Shah mosque, was built by Jalal Khan to celebrate his conquest of the Kalinjar Fort in a battle that killed his father – Sher Shah Suri. He coronated himself with the title Islam Shah and deemed Kalinjar as his capital.
The mosque is a single-storey building on the north side of the Koti Tirth tank. It has three bays and seven aisles but is without any domes on top. It has two entrances, both from the west side. A pointed arch inside has a calligraphy that states "Allah". Near the central mihrab is the stone pulpit. This mosque was built from pillars and parts of Hindu temples desecrated in the Kalinjar Fort. This is evidenced by Sanskrit inscriptions in scripts from the 6th to 15th-century, with some reciting vikram samvat dates long before this mosque was built. One of the embedded pillars inside this mosque is a sahasralinga of a lost Shiva temple. Further no two pillars in the mosque are the same, and their design is those found in Hindu temples. In addition to the Hindu inscriptions, the mosque has a Persian inscription, which mentions Islam Shah and Khan-e-Alam in control of the Kalinjar Fort. |
