A - Sarmatian helmet (from Trajan column), B - Dacian helmet. «La figure 4 présente deux de ces casques barbares. L'un des deux, celui A, se compose d'un tymbre en dôme très relevé, sur- monté d'une pointe: apex. Le couvre-nuque était fait de peau ou d'étoffe, recouvert d'écaillés de métal, et tombait en manière de petit camail sur les épaules. Des jugulaires également de métal couvraient les joues. Le casque B affecte une forme plus caracté- risée. Le tymbre a la figure d'une corne, et est renforcé de deux appendices plats qui composent un cimier sur le devant et par derrière. Peut-être l'extrémité supérieure de la corne était-elle garnie d'un bouquet de crins ou d'un ornement flexible. Les jugulaires et le couvre-nuque ne font qu'un. Il est difficile de ne pas voir dans ces casques les premiers éléments des heaumes germains. Ils sont richement décorés d'ornements de métal et il ne faut pas chercher dans cette ornementation l'expression pure de la fantaisie du sculpteur, car il existe quelques-uns de ces objets de provenance barbare qui présentent la plus riche orne- mentation.».
