Description

This older mask shares similar stylistic features such as the glass covered eyes used by the Kongo People. It is finely carved with a darkened patina and camwood features. Measures 30x20x11cm

Bulu, also spelled Boulou, one of a number of related peoples inhabiting the hilly, forested, south-central area of Cameroon as well as mainland Equatorial Guinea and northern Gabon. These peoples are collectively called the Fang. “Bulu” is a loosely defined term that designates one of the three major subdivisions of the Fang. The Bulu constitute about one-third of the Fang living in Cameroon. www.britannica.com/

Monkey or gorilla masks are known among a number of people in this region including the Bulu, Fang, and Kwele. Masks among these various peoples appeared during initiations to validate and bring initiates into full membership of the men’s Bwiti secret society or they acted to impose sanctions for social control. The Bulu also use similar gorilla or monkey masks.
