"Het was tijdens de intocht van Sinterklaas. Er waren veel Amsterdammers op de been. Ook veel pers, zelfs uit Duitsland, om de goedheiligman te vereeuwigen. En juist die Duitse cameraman wordt door het paard van Valken, de latere hoofdcommissaris van politie, omvergelopen. Ik stond daar toevallig en drukte af. In de donkere kamer bleek dat ik het hoofd van Valken niet had. Ik baalde behoorlijk, dacht dat is niks, maar op de redactie waren ze opgetogen. Ze zagen dat schoentje liggen en wat was er mooier met de intocht van Sinterklaas dan het schoentje. En even later zong de redactie: Sinterklaas kapoentje, gooi wat in mijn schoentje"
