Выносная двусторонняя икона находилась в Успенском соборе Московского Кремля, куда была, по всей вероятности, привезена в середине XVI века из Новгорода. Как полагают некоторые исследователи, она могла быть исполнена для церкви Святого Образа на Добрынинской улице в Новгороде (существует летописное известие об обновлении этого храма в 1191 году). Изображение на обороте выполнены в значительно более экспрессивной манере: хрупкие, как бы парящие фигуры, стремительно развевающиеся складки, исчерченные сложным рисунком пробелов, резкие световые блики на ликах. Подобные живописные приемы были характерны для очень многих византийских и русских памятников конца XII века.
