JPEG file comment | MINIATURIST, French
(active 1180s in Normandy) Fécamp Psalter c. 1180 Illumination on parchment, 170 x 110 mm Royal Library, The Hague In the layout of psalters the calendar illustrations were usually relegated to the space above the text at the top of the page. However, in this psalter, probably made at the Norman abbey at Fécamp in Normandy for a woman patron, the entire left-hand page facing the calendar text is given up to a calendar illustration. The illustration for the month of October represents in the upper zone a peasant man sowing and a peasant woman spinning. In the lower zone a peasant guides a horse-drawn harrow, with sharp spikes to break up the soil.
