| Description | VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - Pipes are staged along the shoreline to be connected to the dredge line on one end and strainer on the other as sand is pumped from the ocean bottom onto the beach. This project is part of the Virginia Beach Hurricane Protection Beach Renourishment Project and is the first renourishment since the project was completed in 2001. The $143 million storm protection project in 2001 included spanning the original boardwalk, adding pump stations, seawall improvements and sand replenishment. Damage prevention has been estimated at $443 million, according to Army Corps of Engineers’ Jennifer Armstrong, project manager for Operation Big Beach. (U.S. Army photo/Pamela Spaugy) |
