Summary

edit
Description
English: This 13th-century stone inscription was originally found in early 20th-century near the house of a Patel family in the village of Uddari (also referred to as Udri, Uddhura, Uddare and Uddharapura), Shivamoga district of Karnataka. The village is also known for its historic Shiva temple from the 12th-century, which has Jaina artwork mixed in with Hindu artwork (near 14°26'39"N 75°08'56"E).
Language: Sanskrit
Script: Nagari
Date of the inscription: May 11 1276 CE
Attribution: Ramachandra (Suena dynasty, also referred to as Yadava dynasty of Devagiri who ruled over c. 1187–1317 CE)

The inscription is significant for several reasons:

It records a period when Delhi Sultanate had begun invading, plundering and looting Hindu kingdoms of the central and south India. These raids contributed to a period of social and political chaos. The inscription mentions Arjunavarman II of Paramara dynasty (Malwa), Kakaladeva of Varata, the oppression of the Turukas (also referred to as the Turks or the Islamic army of the Delhi Sultanate), and the marauder king Gambhira of the Abhira region.
The inscription confirms the extent of the Seuna dynasty kingdom in northern Karnataka, and their preference for Sanskrit and Nagari.
From literary and sociological perspective, this inscription attests to Hindu kings linking themselves to Hindu mythology, as Vishnu-vamsa, reverentially mentioning both Shiva and Vishnu in the same inscription. The last lines compare Ramachandra to "a Rama in action, a Parasurama in determination and a Narayana among kings".
