Back in the days when Aidrie was a terminus station in the extensive Glasgow suburban system. Seen on the left in the platform is class 314 EMU no. 314.208 taken on the evening of 14 June 1983. Over on the right are two of the older class 303 sets nos. 303.058 and 303.042 stabled in the sidings. Class 314s were part of the family of sliding door EMUs introduces in 1979, 16 of these 3-car sets were delivered to the Glasgow area where they have remained ever since. The line continued on past Airdrie through to Bathgate and Edinburgh but for many years was for freight traffic only. In 1989, services were extended one stop further on to Drumgelloch and by then it was announced that services would continue through to Bathgate. In 2010, the line was opened up throughout, Airdirie had a 2nd platform built and through trains to Edinburgh. |
