15th-century stone sculptures from the Great Screen at Winchester Cathedral

Summary edit

Description
English: Stone sculptures (originally brightly painted) representing saints, kings, and bishops which were originally placed in niches within the Great Screen behind the high altar of Winchester Cathedral, constructed under William Waynflete (Bishop of Winchester, 1447–1486). There were originally over fifty sculptures in the screen, but they were all pulled down, and some cut up for reuse as building blocks, in the 1550s. The sculptures shown here were discovered during repairs and construction work in the Cathedral Close, and represent the torsos of six kings, one saint, and a deacon, which would have been placed in the smaller niches; the heads come from larger sculptures, and are the output of two different workshops or sculptors, one carving realistic likenesses of bishops and clergy, the other carving grim-faced prophets.
