Another photo from walks with interesting views of the railway. This is Dent Head viaduct just to the north of Blea Moor Tunnel on the Settle Carlisle railway. Again a photo from our Dales Way walk in April 2008. This was taken on a section of road walking having crossed Blea Moor before heading to the village of Dent for the night. By this point we were well behind schedule, tired after a gruelling day across some rather boggy moorland. It was probably fair to say we had bitten off a bit more than we could chew, though accommodation on or close to this walk is few and far between in some places. By then it was after 18:00. We tried to give up at the next pub about a mile further down the road. With no mobile phone reception, we managed to use a payphone in the pub with no joy of getting a taxi. And the landlady was less than helpful to make matters worse! So we were beginning to resign ourselves to another 4 miles of road walking with the risk of probably arriving at Dent too late after the pubs stopped serving meals. As it happens, a car driver passed us by about a mile further on and we were offered a lift to Dent for our rather nice B&B for the night. And we made the Rising Sun in Dent before they stopped serving food for what was probably the most welcome meal of the whole week! |
