Description

Running over 2.5 hours late, 640950 made a fairly quick run round at Valea Vișeului making up a bit of lost time. This was train R4112, 05:49 Beclean pe Someș to Sighetu Marmației on 16 April 2023. The train conveyed two through coaches from București (train IRN1641) which was delayed not long after the train left Brașov where I joined it.

This station, very close to the Ukraine border now has a twice a day service to Rakhiv which was introduced in the December 2022 timetable. Despite of the ongoing conflict further east in Ukraine efforts have been made to keep rail services from adjoining EU countries (and Moldova) countries open where possible. Despite the late running would have still allowed a photo of both the Romanian loco hauled train and Ukrainian railcar, the line over the border was closed for engineering work.

The train continued on from Valea Vișeului to Sighetu Marmației, another border town where you can walk over the river bridge into Solotvyno in Ukraine for rail connections to Lviv via Chop.
