Summary edit
Description17.04.08 Lowgill Viaduct (5966411680).jpg | Having seen the viaduct countless times from the train passing up and down the West Coast Main Line, I managed to walk under it whilst on day 4 of 5 of the 80 mile long Dales Way. The line it carried up joined the WCML and carried onto Clapham (Yorks) being referred to as the Ingleton branch. Originally the Lancaster and Carlisle Railway opening in 1861, later the London and North Western Railway (LNWR), then the LMS and finally British Railways. The branch lost its passenger service in 1954, finally closing to freight traffic in 1966. |
