Philippe Herreweghe - Bach Cantates Nederlands: Op 31 oktober 1517 spijkerde Martin Luther zijn 95 stellingen tegen de handel in aflaten op de deur van de slotkapel in Wittenberg (Saksen): het begin van de reformatie. 31 oktober werd in Saksen een feestdag. In Leipzig wordt Bach geconfronteerd met deze ‘Reformatiedag’. Hij pakt ervoor uit met een feestelijke bezetting in ‘Gott der Herr ist Sonn und Schild’: naast strijkers en continuo ook twee hobo’s, twee hoorns en pauken. Jaren later componeerde Bach - vertrekkend van bestaand materiaal uit zijn Weimartijd - de beroemde cantate op ‘Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott’. ‘Christ lag in Todesbanden’ is een van de eerste cantates die Bach schreef. Voor dit indrukwekkend, somber en grimmig jeugdwerk gebruikte hij de zeven verzen van het paaslied van Martin Luther. Pour cette œuvre de jeunesse impressionnante, maussade et dure, il employa les sept vers du chant de louanges pour la fête de Pâques de Martin Luther. English: On 31st October 1517, Martin Luther nailed his 95 theses on the trade in indulgences on the door of the castle chapel in Wittenberg (Saxony): this signalled the start of the Reformation. 31st October became a regular holiday in Saxony. Bach was confronted with this 'Reformation Day' in Leipzig. He came up with a festive instrumentation in 'Gott der Herr ist Sonn und Schild': in addition to the strings and continuo, it also involved two oboes, two horns and timpani. Many years later, on the basis of material from his Weimar period, Bach composed the renowned cantata 'Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott'.'Christ lag in Todesbanden' is one of the first cantatas Bach wrote. For this impressive, sombre and forbidding work of his younger years, he used the seven verses of Martin Luther's Easter song. |
