Medicon Villages vd Mats Leifland berättar om hur scienceparken ska utvecklas under kommande fem åren.

120 företag och organisationer – med över 1 600 arbetsplatser – finns i dag i de lokaler i Lund som tidigare tillhörde läkemedelsjätten Astra Zeneca som hade knappt 1 000 anställda där när de under 2010 beslutade att lägga ner forskningsanläggningen. Nedläggningsbeskedet skapade krisstämning men också en arbetsgrupp ledd av Lunds universitets dåvarande ordförande Allan Larsson och i samarbete med Lund, Malmö och Region Skåne med målet att rädda kvar läkemedelsforskningen i Astra Zenecas lokaler. Efter begynnande motgångar kom räddningen när fastighetsentreprenören Mats Paulsson såg potentialen i de tomma lokalerna. Han donerade privat 100 miljoner kronor till den stiftelse som idag äger Medicon Village och som den 10 januari 2012 övertog forskningslokalerna från Astra Zeneca.

Den 10 januari 2012 lämnade Astra Zeneca lokalerna till Medicon Village och i slutet av 2012 hade 70 aktörer med över 570 medarbetare flyttat in. Under 2017 har siffran ökat till 120 aktörer och 1600 anställda. Bland medlemmarna, som hyresgästerna benämns, finns Lunds universitet med en grupp cancerforskare, Region Skåne, European Spallation Source, bioinkubatorn Smile och en lång rad företag, däribland Alligator Bioscience.
