Summary edit

Description
English: The Surya Siddhanta is an astronomy and timekeeping text from ancient India. It is in Sanskrit language, but exists in many regional scripts. The above palm leaf manuscript is in the Grantha script.

The palm leaf manuscript was bought by C.M. Whish in 1836 in Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu. For further information about this manuscript, see A catalog of South Indian Sanskrit manuscripts (especially those of the Whish Collection) belonging to the Royal Asiatic Society of Great Britain and Ireland by M. Winternitz, with an appendix by F. W. Thomas (London: RAS, 1902) p.75-76

According to The Royal Asiatic Society of Great Britain and Ireland, the Grantha script manuscript consists of 3 texts, as follows: 1. the Suryasiddhanta in 14 adhyāyas (ff.40); 2. the Ashtadhyayi by the Sanskrit grammar scholar Panini (ff.43); 3. the Viṣṇubhujaṅga, a stotra in 18 stanzas. Winternitz notes that this text is ascribed to Śaṅkara in Burnell, A. C. 'Classified index to the Sanskrit MSS. in the Palace at Tanjore' (London, 1880), p.201b.

The photo above is of a 2D artwork of a text that is over 2,500 years old, from a manuscript that was produced decades before 1836 CE. Therefore Wikimedia Commons PD-Art licensing guidelines apply. Any rights I have as a photographer is herewith donated to wikimedia commons under CC 4.0 license.
