English: This map, labeled as "Atlas of New Jersey: County of Atlantic", from G. M. Hopkins's "Combined atlas of the state of New Jersey and the late township of Greenville, now part of Jersey City, from actual survey official records [sic?] & private plans", published in 1873, shows Atlantic County and its surroundings as far northwest as Camden as they were in 1873. It shows the coastlines, rivers (usually labeled) and lakes (usually not labeled), prominent hills, roads and railroads, and towns of the area, along with most of the municipal boundaries (in different colors for those within Atlantic County: Weymouth, Egg Harbor Township, Hamilton, Buena Vista, Mullica, Galloway, and Absecon are shown as separate municipalities, but Hammonton and Egg Harbor City are shown as parts of Mullica and Galloway Townships despite having been legally separated before the date of publication). The scale is given as 4 miles per inch, with example distances shown for comparison. Latitude and longitude lines are drawn across the map and numbered on the edges.
This map was (according to the note at the bottom right) "Eng[rave]d by E. Busch, 320 Walnut St., Phila[delphia]"; a scanned version of it is visible at the Library of Congress website at https://www.loc.gov/resource/g3810m.gla00033/?sp=13&r=-0.279,0.094,1.71,1.072,0, and I downloaded it as a TIFF file from there at https://tile.loc.gov/storage-services/master/gmd/gmd381m/g3810m/g3810m/gla00033/ca000013.tif (archive) and converted it to a PNG file using the free tool at https://www.freeconvert.com/tif-to-png.

editThis image is in the public domain because it is a mere mechanical scan or photocopy of a public domain original, or – from the available evidence – is so similar to such a scan or photocopy that no copyright protection can be expected to arise. The original itself is in the public domain for the following reason:
This tag is designed for use where there may be a need to assert that any enhancements (eg brightness, contrast, colour-matching, sharpening) are in themselves insufficiently creative to generate a new copyright. It can be used where it is unknown whether any enhancements have been made, as well as when the enhancements are clear but insufficient. For known raw unenhanced scans you can use an appropriate {{PD-old}} tag instead. For usage, see Commons:When to use the PD-scan tag. Note: This tag applies to scans and photocopies only. For photographs of public domain originals taken from afar, {{PD-Art}} may be applicable. See Commons:When to use the PD-Art tag. |
