On 24 August 1878 Wellington’s steam-tram service was formally opened, taking over from some horse-drawn transport routes. However, the service was short lived. Steam-trams proved to be unpopular with Wellington residents, some of whom petitioned for their removal. The image above is of a petition to Governor Sir Hercules Robinson requesting “the use of animal power only” for Wellington’s trams. Dated 4 December 1879, the petitioners believed the use of steam driven trams to be “not only unnecessary and a nuisance, but is dangerous and serious impediment to ordinary traffic”. Horses being startled by the steam is cited as one example of a risk to public safety. By 1893, the sound of horse-drawn trams had completely replaced steam-driven public transport on Wellington streets.
