English: From the source:
Photograph of the two-storeyed Buddhist monastery and temple at Aihole, Northern Karnataka, taken by Henry Cousens in the 1880s. Aihole was both a capital and an important commercial centre of the early western Chalukyas, a Hindu dynasty which ruled parts of the Deccan from the 6th century. At Aihole, there are a large number of Hindu and Jain temples at the site dating from the 6th to 12th centuries. This is a Buddhist monument. All of these were built by Hindu dynasties. This view shows a partly rock-cut structure from the 6th century, arranged on two levels with a verandah in front. On the lower level the central sanctuary is flanked by two chambers opening onto a narrow corridor. The upper level has a sanctuary entered from a porch. The doorways are decorated with relief carvings on the sides. The superstructure contains ceiling panel in the upper porch depicting a seated Buddha (damaged). The Meguti hill hosts Buddhist, Jain and Hindu monuments. These were converted into a fort and encampment by a Muslim army commander of the Bijapur Sultanate during his wars with Hindu kingdoms, given the hill is a high point with good views of plains below. |
