18 June 1815 – Victory at Waterloo – Lord Wellington's Bust, St Joseph's Church

Summary edit

Description
English: Bust of Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington (1769-1852).
Signed and dated "G. G. Adams. Sc. // London. 1855" on the back. (Marble, ca. 60 cm)

George Gammon Adams (1821 – 1898), first a renowned medallist, became famous as portraitist-sculptor. Having been chosen to take Lord Wellington's death mask, he created a first bust in 1852 for the 2nd Duke of Wellington (1808-1884). So appreciated was it that G. G. Adams made several versions of it in the following years.
One of them has been presented by the 2nd Duke of Wellington to Saint Joseph's Church : A l'intérieur du grillage qui ferme la partie méridionale du dôme, on voit, posé sur un socle de marbre, le buste de Wellington, en marbre blanc, qui a été donné par la famille de ce grand capitaine. (Tarlier)
The bust is now preserved in the rotunda : ►(File:18_June_1815_–_Victory_at_Waterloo_–_The_Duke.jpg). The protective showcase is a later addition.

In the Wellington Museum, across the street : another bust of Lord Wellington ►(File:18_June_1815_–_Victory_at_Waterloo_–_Draped_Bust_of_Lord_Wellington.jpg).
