18 June 1815 – Waterloo – Hougoumont. The chapel, entrance

Summary edit

Description
English: The importance of Château d'Hougoumont in the 18th century was such that the entire property figured, to scale, on the 1770-1778 Ferraris Map, folio 78, as Chateau d'Hougoumont. The chateau-ferme had its own chapel (shown).

The whole property was severely destroyed at the height of yet another napoléonic battle, the one on June 18th, 1815 : the Battle of Waterloo. Only a few buildings could be restored over time. And in preparation of the June 2015 commemorations (Waterloo 200), the salvaged buildings have been secured and returned to their state as at times of the battle – United Kingdom Treasury being the major contributor to the restorations. Since 2015, Hougoumont Farm is now a museum and memorial.

Symbolically, Hougoumont Chapel compares with the Gedächtniskirche, Berlin.
The first commemorative plaque, the large bronze on the western wall, was erected in 1907 : ►(File:18 June 1815 – Waterloo – Hougoumont. The chapel, plaque 1907.jpg).
